FRIDAY, April 25 (HealthDay News) -- You can grow a healthier tomato by watering it with diluted seawater, a new study shows.
In an experiment in which researchers grew cherry tomatoes in either freshwater or a diluted solution of 12 percent seawater, the salt-water tomatoes developed higher levels of vitamin C, vitamin E, dihydrolipoic acid and chlorogenic acid. Each substance is an antioxidant that may help fight heart disease, cancer, aging and other conditions.
The findings, expected to be published in the May 14 issue of the American Chemical Society's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, hold promise not only for health reasons, but also because using salt water to irrigate tomato crops could ease potable-water shortages in some parts of the world, the researchers noted.
In recent years, tomatoes have been linked to several possible health benefits, including protection against prostate cancer and heart disease.

Italian researchers report that the nutritional content of tomatoes — cherry tomatoes, in this case — improves when the plants are irrigated with diluted seawater.
Cristina Sgherri and colleagues at the University of Pisa grew cherry tomatoes with normal irrigation water and with water diluted with 12 percent seawater. They found that the seawater tomatoes were about 60 percent smaller by weight, on average, than those grown with regular water. But the seawater tomatoes were tastier, with higher acidity and a higher concentration of sugars.
Where the seawater tomatoes really stood out, though, was in concentrations of antioxidants, including vitamins C and E and chlorogenic acid. The findings were reported in The Journal of Agricultural Chemistry.
The researchers say that using seawater would be useful in areas like Sicily where freshwater supplies are limited. And as to the smaller size of the tomatoes, they suggest that because of the greater nutritional value, farmers might be able to charge more.

Sea water is remarkably similar to blood in many ways. When comparing the concentrations of various elements in seawater and blood, we find that the two most common elements in each are Chlorine (Cl) and then Sodium (Na). Together they make Sodium Chloride (NaCl), or common table salt. The concentrations are higher in seawater than in blood, though. When it's been used for transfusions seawater needs to be diluted in fresh water first.
After Na and Cl, as you go to the lower-concentration elements the two liquids start to differ in their elemental concentrations as far as which is where on the list, but the next-most common elements or compounds in both are Sulfate, Magnesium, Calcium, and Potassium. So they actually are very similar.
The pH range (a measure of acidity or alkalinity) of seawater is normally 7.4 - 8.2, while in blood it's 7.38 - 7.44 (the body keeps this in a very tight range).
It's thought that seawater and blood used to be much closer in composition when organisms that eventually became land mammals developed in the oceans eons ago. Over time the oceans are believed to have risen in elemental concentrations (become more salty) as more elements dissolved and washed off of the land from the action of rainwater and into the sea.
When you look at the rarer elements in blood, you begin to find wider variations from what's in seawater. So it's certainly not identical to blood.
But it has been used in transfusions, both in emergencies and in medical experiments.
Experiments were run on dogs in the early 1900s to test diluted, filtered ocean water as a substitute transfusion liquid. An early experimenter named René Quinton and his team drained all of a dog's blood and replaced it with the seawater solution. The dog lived, and on the second day after the transfusion, half of its normal blood components had returned, regenerated by its body. By the fourth day its blood was back to virtually normal and the dog was active and full of energy and happy. The dog went on to live for many years afterward, with no visible problems as a result of the experiment.

A new Japanese study reveals that drinking seawater may help relieve those with stomach troubles from pain, indigestion, and even decrease the risk of developing stomach cancer and ulcers, the Daily Mail reports.
Researchers at the Kochi Medical School in Japan asked 23 patients to drink seawater, thinking that it might help kill the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, which infects up to four in ten people at some stage during their lives. The bacteria are the main cause of stomach ulcers, triggering an ulcer in about 15 percent of

In this study, we investigated the effects of deep-sea water (DSW) on the metastatic potential of two human breast cancer cell lines exhibiting highly different phenotypes. MDA-MB-231 cells exhibit invasive/metastatic tumor features with rapid migration ability and high endogenous expression of TGF-β and Wnt5a. DSW treatment significantly inhibits their migratory ability in a wound-healing assay. This inhibitory effect of DSW appears to be mediated through TGF-β and Wnt5a signaling, resulting in attenuated expression of CD44. We further investigated the preventive effect of DSW on 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced invasive/metastatic tumor features in non-invasive MCF-7 cells. Similar to the inhibitory effects shown in MDA-MB-231 cells, we observed that DSW treatment resulted in the inhibition of TPA-induced migration and MMP-9 activity with a concomitant decrease in mRNA levels of MMP-9, TGF-β, Wnt5a and Wnt3a. Taken together, our data show that DSW has inhibitory effects on breast cancer invasion/metastasis, suggesting that DSW has some promise in improving cancer survival by preventing tumor metastasis.
Drinking seawater with high levels of magnesium (Mg) decreased serum lipids in animal studies. Therefore the effects of drinking DSW on blood lipids and its antioxidant capacity in hypercholesterolemic subjects were investigated. DSW was first prepared by a process of filtration and reverse osmosis, and then the concentrated DSW with high levels of Mg was diluted as drinking DSW. Forty-two hypercholesterolemic volunteers were randomly divided into three groups: reverse osmotic (RO) water, DSW (Mg: 395 mg/L, hardness 1410 ppm), and magnesium-chloride fortified (MCF) water (Mg: 386 mg/L, hardness 1430 ppm). The subjects drank 1050 mL of water daily for 6 weeks, and blood samples were collected and analyzed on weeks 0, 3, and 6. Drinking DSW caused a decrease in blood total cholesterol levels and this effect was progressively enhanced with time. Serum low-density lipoprotein–cholesterol (LDL-C) was also decreased by DSW. Further, total cholesterol levels of subjects in the DSW group were significantly lower than those in the MCF water or RO water groups. Compared with week 0, the DSW group had higher blood Mg level on weeks 3 and 6, but the Mg levels were within the normal range in all three groups. DSW consumption also lowered thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) values in serum. In conclusion, DSW was apparently effective in reducing blood total cholesterol and LDL-C, and also in decreasing lipid peroxidation in hypercholesterolemic subjects.

Resume of the evaluation:
The evaluation was done with a team of non professional cyclists who took HYPERTONIC SEAWATER solution orally. The evaluation demonstrated that the natural sea water, physiologically compatible with the human organism containing the full spectrum of minerals in their natural ionic form, improves the subjective and objective parameters of a cyclist's performance.
The use of the rule of analogy as a method is a new strategy for this evaluation.
Objective of the evaluation:
To determine the effect of the oral use (drinkable) of HYPERTONIC SEAWATER SOLUTION on the performance of cyclists of different ages during one month. The average dosage of the HYPERTONIC SEAWATER consumed daily by each cyclist was four (4) ampoules, a total of 40 ml. The cyclists covered a distance of 150 km each week.
During cycling: 2 ampoules before cycling
2 ampoules after cycling
In addition: 2 ampoules in the morning
2 ampoules in the afternoon
Methodology of assessing the experience of cyclists:
The evaluation was made for a group of different cyclists of the same club, mostly experienced cyclists, as well as an older professional cyclist, who all had won prizes in past competitions.
At the start of the evaluation, the aims were discussed by the director with the cyclists. Two questionnaires were used, one for day 0 and one for day 30. The evaluation was on scale of 1-10.
Number 1 was equivalent to a very weak physical condition, and 10 for an excellent physical condition.
Each cyclist determined his own physical condition, based on the rule of analogy. This involved a subjective assessment the way pain is evaluated in hospital pain clinics. This subjective evaluation was objectively followed during the 30 day period by observing the subject's physical performance from day 0 to day 30.
The first questionnaire defined the physical condition of each cyclist at day zero; and the second on day thirty (30), after he had finished a course of HYPERTONIC SEAWATER. All the cyclists agreed to complete the questionnaire and a parallel medical evaluation of each cyclist was done during the same period. After the first questionnaire, at day zero was completed, it was given to the doctor, and the cyclist was no longer able to review it until he had completed the second questionnaire at day thirty.
The second questionnaire at day thirty, was based on answers in real time. To the surprise of most of the cyclists, they saw an evident improvement of the measured parameters.
Several of the cyclists helped to review the observations, which underlined the importance of assessing certain parameters related to the analysis of behaviour of the cyclists during and after the races. This analysis was relevant to the individual cyclist as well as to the entire group.
Results of the evaluation:
Based on the answers of each questionnaire, all the parameters improved, except for two cyclists who experienced an increase in nervous tension. Only one cyclist withdrew from the study, due to severe high blood pressure, which he omitted to report prior to commencing the study.
The remarkable evidence of the evaluation:
1. There was an improvement in endurance, reduction in fatigue and recovery of energy after the race, for all the cyclists. All cyclists improved their overall potential.
2. The increased capacity to perform in pursuits and accelerate on hills, showed that the body was mobilizing a greater energy level.
The conclusions of the evaluation:
The consumption of the HYPERTONIC SEAWATER, based on the prescribed dosages, produced an objective improvement in the physical performance of the athletes as shown by the statistics. The results are particularly significant for the improved level of performance. The capacity to sustain the physical effort on the cycling course and climbing hills as well as a speed in energy recovery after the cycling events improved substantially.
One hundred years ago, seawater was used traditionally by many medical doctors for a large variety of afflictions, often with remarkable success.
From 1905 until the beginning of the first world war in 1914, the biologist René Quinton carried out a tremendous amount of research to prove that diluted seawater (isotonic) is identical to the internal body environment, and he determined that seawater is a direct blood replacement. From these experiments he developed special harvesting methods for seawater and established a viable protocol for administering his increasingly popular therapy that he simply named "The Marine Method". Many case histories attest to the effectiveness of the seawater treatments. The protocol for oral use of Marine Plasma (Ocean Plasma) is exceedingly simple.
The medical doctor Jean Jarricot (pediatrician) worked for many years in his Dispensary where he treated literally thousands of children with seawater, his Marine Plasma, and he collaborated with Quinton to document detailed therapies and treatment protocols for nurslings. He had particularly good success with children afflicted with athrepsia and cholera. Even back in 1924, he already practiced oral use of seawater.

Doctor Barrière has published a book entitled "L'EAU DE MER en ingestion dans les dyspepsies" (Ocean Water used orally in dispepsia cases) - its effects regarding gastric secretions and urinary excretion." This is a 22-page excerpt of the book referenced above.
In three chapter he explains:
1.) The oral use of Ocean Water - oral use of seawater from the time of Hipporates to 1904. There are also details of lab work by Professor Arnozan.
2.) Ocean Water when used by injection according to the work by Quinton (1897-1907)L'eau de mer en injection - its special influence with digestive problems.
3.) Ocean Water - its physical and chemical characteristics. Therapeutic definitions and intruction how to use it.
Although Dr. Olivier Macé does not mention oral use, he had tremendous success in 1924 using isotonic seawater injections with difficult pregnancies and pre-natal applications. His detailed case histories are interesting to peruse.
In Senegal, Doctors H. Lauture and G. Mbakob (1978) successfully treated one hundred children suffering from profound dehydration caused by diarrheas, vomiting and malnutrition using subcutaneous injections and oral administration of the Marine Plasma. It was made quite clear that otherwise between 40-70% of these children would have died.
Drs. André Passebecq and Jean-Marc Soulier (year unknown) documented some very detailed scientific observations regarding the effectiveness of seawater in various applications and advocated oral use of seawater. Oral dosage as a mineral supplement does not seem to be very important - but regularity is. For a normalization of body fluid pH, a short- to medium term therapy of drinkable hypertonic seawater solution invariably brings quick results.
Dr. F. Paya (1997) reported using the Quinton plasma to regulate the endocrine system in cases of secondary hyper aldosteronism. He also reported excellent success with oral use of seawater in treating fatigue and maintaining the physical performance of athletes. Dr. Paya used either the isotonic or hypertonic seawater formulas, with both children and adults, in cases of dehydration, asthenia, loss of appetite and convalescence.
In Canada, seawater is used primarily as a FOOD, a nutritional supplement. Also, the isotonic plasma is increasingly being used in conjunction with colonic therapy.
The Germans have shown that drinking the marine plasma was as effective as subcutaneous injections. Dr. R. Basser (1953) reported that 70% of his cases suffering from psoriasis, prurigo and neurodermatitis showed considerable improvement when treated with the marine plasma.
In 1954 Dr. R. Bench reported good improvement among one hundred allergic patients. In all his cases, he reported the profound effect of the marine plasma on the total organism.
Dr. H. Hansche (1957) observed that oral administration of marine plasma had powerful regulating action on the intestines. As well, he obtained remarkable improvements in many patients suffering from asthma and eczema.
